Ahmedabad: After being denied tickets by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), at least one sitting MLA and four former MLAs of the party have threatened to contest as independent candidates in the Gujarat Assembly elections. Gujarat Assembly elections will be held in two stages on December 1 and 5.

Former BJP MLA Harshad Vasava filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate from the Nandod (Scheduled Tribe reserved) seat on Friday, despite the fact that some disgruntled party leaders have said they will take their next step after consulting their supporters.

It is worth noting that Harshad Vasava is the President of the Gujarat unit of the BJP's Scheduled Tribe Morcha and previously represented the Rajpipla seat from 2002 to 2007 and from 2007 to 2012. The Narmada district seat of Nandod is currently held by the Congress.

Dr. Darshan Deshmukh has been nominated by the BJP for this seat. Harshad Vasava, who was dissatisfied with the announcement, resigned from the BJP and filed his nomination papers for the Nandod seat on Friday.

Vasava told reporters after filing his nomination papers, "There is real BJP and fake BJP here." We will expose those who have sidelined hardworking employees in favour of newcomers. I've submitted my resignation to the party. People in this district are aware of how much work I did as MLA between 2002 and 2012. A sitting and two former BJP MLAs in neighbouring Vadodara district are upset with the party for not giving them tickets.

Madhu Srivastava, a six-time MLA from Waghodia, said he would run as an independent if his supporters wanted. The BJP has fielded Ashwin Patel for this seat. Dinesh Patel, alias Dinu Mama, a former BJP MLA from Padra in Vadodara district, has also announced that he will run as an independent candidate. Chaitanya Singh Zala has been given a ticket from this seat by the BJP. This seat is held by Congress.

Former BJP MLA Satish Patel in Karjan is dissatisfied with the decision to give the ticket to sitting MLA Akshay Patel. To deal with the situation, BJP state unit general secretary Bhargav Bhatt and minister of state for home Harsh Sanghvi visited Vadodara on Saturday and met local party workers. Bhatt expressed confidence that the BJP would win all of the seats in Vadodara.

Meanwhile, Arvind Ladani, a former BJP MLA from Junagadh's Keshod seat, announced on Saturday that he will run as an independent candidate because the party has nominated sitting MLA Devbhai Malam. So far, the BJP has announced candidates for 166 of the total 182 assembly constituencies.
