The government of Pakistan has decided to free 20 Indian fishermen. All of these fishermen were arrested by the Pakistan Marine Security Agency in 2018 while fishing in the Arabian Sea. The release of Indian fisherman is being carried out for the second time this year by the Government of Pakistan.

In this regard, Balu Bhai Soya, the head of the Marine Workers Protection Association, told the magazine that for the last two years, diplomatic discussions between India and Pakistan have been stalled, with innocent fishermen bearing the brunt of the consequences. Fishermen caught in cross-border offences while fishing in the Arabian Sea are sentenced to 2 to 4 months in prison, according to the International Court of Justice, but the release process is closed due to the closure of diplomatic talks between the two countries.

The Pakistani government is now leaving only 20-20 Indian fishermen who were arrested 4-4 years ago. As a result of the two nations' lack of communication, more than 600 Indian fisherman are currently imprisoned in Pakistan, while 80 Pakistani fishermen are imprisoned in India. Aside from that, around 1150 Indian boats have been captured in Karachi harbour.

Every year, more than 200 fisherman are released

Until the diplomatic discussions between India and Pakistan resumed, the Pakistani government released more than 200 Indian fisherman every year. As a result of the closure of talks, the Pakistani government is currently releasing only 20-20 fishermen who have been imprisoned there for four years.

However, all of the Indian fishermen who were returned from Pakistan on Monday are from Gujarat, including 13 from Gir Somnath, 7 from Dev Dwarka, and one from Jamnagar district. According to reports, a team from the Gujarat Fisheries Department has departed for Amritsar to pick up the fishermen who were released from Karachi, Pakistan on Monday.
